Why You Should Assess Your Risk For Sustaining A Work Injury

Considering just how much time we spend at work out of a typical 24-hour day, perhaps it should not be surprising to learn that accidents at work are so commonplace these days. We know that our work can be a risky place at the best of times and we have to have our wits about us as we go about our daily chores. Sometimes we are at a heightened sense of alert and awareness, as we know that the risk of accident or injury is greater. This happens, for example, when we are driving on the highway especially if road conditions are wet and the volume of traffic is pretty high. If you do happen to have a risky occupation, then you may well be alert as you work, but many of us don’t have an occupation that could be classified as dangerous or risky in any way and perhaps we are not as aware of any potential dangers as we should be.

If you have a sedentary occupation like an office job, you might think that it's very unlikely that you will get a work injury. Certainly, the odds are not as great as they may be if you worked in construction, spend a lot of time up on scaffolding, or you are responsible for transporting dangerous goods. Yet statistics do show that a significant number of accidents at work take place in an environment that should, ordinarily, be "low risk." There are many different ways you could be injured in an office situation. A filing cabinet could be faulty. An electrical item could be malfunctioning. Obstacles could be placed on the floor which could cause you to trip and fall. You could suffer from repetitive strain injury if the workplace has not been configured correctly.

There again, we should never forget about the negligence of other employees at the workplace

They may not be as careful as you are and may inadvertently cause a situation to happen that injures you. Note that in many cases the employer will be responsible for the actions of that employee and you have a course of action to pursue the employer as a consequence.

What should you do if you have sustained a work injury?

You may know that you need to report it according to the stipulations set down by the government for your particular business location. The employer will need to have full details as they, in turn, may need to file certain reports. You need to gather as much information together as you possibly can, including the contact details of any witnesses. Remember that you should never trust your memory alone to provide you with all the details as this entire situation may take some time before you actually present a case to claim compensation from the employer.

How best to proceed in the event of an incident involving a work accident

Whilst we cannot lead our lives in fear of what may happen on any given day and be overly worried about being injured, we nevertheless need to know what we need to do and how we need to proceed if something untoward does happen.
